Training Workshop for Interns and Volunteers (19-24 Aug 2019)

Event: Volunteer work period, beginning with a six-day training workshop (residential)

Topic: Earthen building, organic gardening, and permaculture landscaping

When: 19th–24th August 2019 (must attend from the start and remain for the duration), followed by a practicum until at least 7th September, with the option to extend by one more week until 14th September 2019 (minimum time commitment is three weeks, including the training, so all participants will stay on to volunteer until at least 7th September).

Language: English (with Hindi translation if requested)

Facilitators: Dharmalaya Institute’s artisans and interns

Description: Volunteer work period, beginning with a six-day residential workshop to provide introductory hands-on training in some of the foundational skills of earthen building, organic gardening, and permaculture landscaping as practiced at Dharmalaya Institute, followed by at least three weeks of volunteer work. The actual training activities wiill depend on weather and the needs on site at the time, and might include mud plastering, flooring, fine finishing, etc.). There will be an extended practicum after the workshop supporting participants to deepen your skills and understanding further through practice on site. Note: The minimum commitment for all participants in this workshop is to stay as a volunteer until at least 7th September, and for those who wish to stay one more week it is possible to stay until 14th September.

Sustainable Thriving Intensive Workshop (11-28 Jun 2019)

What: Intensive workshop-retreat (residential)

Topic: Sustainable Thriving: principles and practices for better living, including permaculture, earthen building, and creative life design

When: 11-28 June 2019 (must attend from the start and stay for the duration), with an optional extended practicum afterward.

Facilitators: Mark Moore and artisans from the Dharmalaya community

Description: A eighteen-day residential training workshop exploring key principles and practices of ‘sustainable thriving’, including voluntary simplicity, permaculture, earthen building, and creative life design. The first six days will provide initial training with hands-on workshops during the day and presentations/discussions in the evenings; the middle six days will be a practicum for improving skills and deepening understanding through morning and afternoon work sessions, while continuing our discussions and explorations in the evenings; and the final six days will be organized according to the needs on site and the interests of the group. For those desiring even more hands-on experience, there will be an optional extended practicum providing an opportunity to improve your skills and understanding further by working alongside our team of artisans. There will be group meditation sessions in the mornings and evenings, and opportunities to practice yoga or chi kung.

Earthen Building Workshop (1-10 May 2019)

Topic: Construction of Kangra-style earthen buildings

When: 1-10 May 2019 (must attend from the start and remain for the duration), followed by an optional extended practicum until as late as 1st June 2019

Facilitators: Dharmalaya Institute’s junior faculty, artisans, and interns

Description: Ten-day residential workshop to provide introductory hands-on training in some of the foundational skills of earthen building in the neo-traditional Kangra style of esteemed eco-architect Didi Contractor as practiced at Dharmalaya Institute. Learn to work with earth in an adobe structure, including making and laying adobe bricks, as well as other interior work (which, depending on weather and the needs on site at the time, might include flooring, fine finishing, etc.). There will also be the option to stay on for the extended practicum after the workshop if you wish to deepen your skills and understanding further through practice on site.

Description: Nine-day residential workshop-retreat focused on creating a more compassionate life, through opening the heart, informing the mind, developing our innate qualities of sensitivity and compassion, and putting that compassion into practice by reducing our harm footprints and increasing our help footprints in all spheres of life. The primary emphasis in this programme is on identifying areas of our lives where we need to change and grow in order to become more compassionate citizens of the world and more effective agents of positive change.

Description: A two-part exploration of meditation and inner and outer sustainability: First, a one-week, (mostly) silent meditation retreat in the Insight Meditation tradition (18-26 March), followed by an optional ten-day service retreat providing opportunities to put meditation into action through work on earthen building, organic gardening, and permaculture landscaping, while also continuing formal meditation practice in the mornings and evenings (27 March - 6 April). Led by Zohar Lavie and Nathan Glyde of SanghaSeva, with Mark Moore and other members of Dharmalaya’s faculty and artisan team facilitating the service work.

Building the Builders: A Deep-dive Workshop for Interns & Residents (14-25 Jan 2019)

Description: A twelve-day workshop exploring some of the finer points of earthen building and collaborative community living as practiced at Dharmalaya Institute, bridging skill development and personal development. The workshop is open to interns and long-term volunteers of Dharmalaya Institute as well as current and past participants of Dharmalaya workshops, so a prerequisite is having attended a prior programme at the Institute. Activities and discussions will be organized according to the needs on site and the interests of the group. For those desiring even more hands-on experience, the workshop will be followed by an optional extended practicum providing an opportunity to improve your skills and understanding further by working alongside our team of artisans.
