Description: Nine-day residential service-learning programme in a workshop-retreat format, exploring both the outer and inner aspects of a compassionate and sustainable life, including organic gardening and permaculture, natural building, healthy cooking and eating, meditation, mindful movment (yoga/chi kung), and more.

Earthen Interiors 3: Features & Finishing (6-17 Aug 2018)

Event: Introductory training workshop (residential)

Topic: Interior work in Kangra-style earthen buildings

When: 6-17 August 2018 (must attend from the start and remain for the duration), followed by optional practicum (volunteer work period) until as late as 6th October.

Language: English (with Hindi translation if requested)

Facilitators: Architect Anujna Dnyaneshwar, supported by Dharmalaya Institute’s artisans and interns

Description: A twelve-day training workshop exploring a range of interior features and finishing processes of earthen building as practiced in the neo-traditional Kangra vernacular as pioneered by Didi Contractor. Learn to build special features such as an earthen oven or ferrocrete composting toilet, as well as other features and fine finishing work (e.g. wood finishing, slate finishing, etc.). The workshop will be followed by an optional extended practicum (volunteer period) for as many weeks as you would like to stay (up until as late as 6th October), during which you can improve your skills and understanding by working with our team of artisans.

Introduction to Earthen Interiors (30 Apr - 11 May 2018)

When: 30th April through 11th May 2018 (must attend from the start and remain for the duration), followed by optional practicum (volunteer work period) until as late as 8th June.

Description: Twelve-day residential workshop to provide introductory hands-on training in some of the foundational skills of earthen building — specifically focusing on interiors — in the neo-traditional Kangra style as developed by esteemed eco-architect Didi Contractor. Learn to create and apply earthen renders (mud plaster) in an adobe structure, as well as other interior work (e.g. flooring, fine finishing, etc.). The workshop will be followed by an optional extended practicum (volunteer period) of up to four weeks, during which you can improve your skills and understanding by working with our team of artisans.

Description: Twelve-day residential service-learning programme in a workshop-retreat format at the Dharmalaya Institute, exploring both the outer and inner aspects of a compassionate and sustainable life. This holistic programme will touch on the major spheres of compassionate living, including food, shelter, water, energy, consumption and waste, and other important areas, providing a broad conceptual overview supported by practice. Activities will include hands-on training in earthen building and organic gardening with a daily programme of meditation and traditional Himalayan wisdom, conscious movement and healthy food. Learn the basics of earthen (adobe) consctruction, and learn to grow, cook and eat tasty and nourishing, plant-based (vegan) meals, all while contemplating our relationship with nature and the values of sustainable and compassionate living. Deepen your practice with morning and evening group meditation sessions and mindful movement (yoga or chi kung) in the mornings.
