Compassionate Living Workshop (4-21 Apr 2018)

What: Intensive workshop-retreat (residential)

Topic: Compassionate living, including natural building, organic gardening, healthy cooking, meditation, and more

When: 4-21 April 2018 (must attend from the start), followed by an optional extended practicum (volunteer work week) until 28th April

Language: English (with Hindi translation if requested)

Facilitators: Mark Moore, Naresh Sharma, and members of the faculty of Dharmalaya Institute

Description: Eighteen-day residential service-learning programme in a workshop-retreat format at the Dharmalaya Institute, exploring both the outer and inner aspects of a compassionate and sustainable life. This holistic programme will touch on the major spheres of compassionate living, including food, shelter, water, energy, consumption and waste, and other important areas, providing a broad conceptual overview supported by practice. Activities will include hands-on training in earthen building and organic gardening with a daily programme of meditation and traditional Himalayan wisdom, conscious movement and healthy food. Learn the basics of earthen (adobe) consctruction, and learn to grow, cook and eat tasty and nourishing, plant-based (vegan) meals, all while contemplating our relationship with nature and the values of sustainable and compassionate living. Deepen your practice with morning and evening group meditation sessions and mindful movement (yoga or chi kung) in the mornings.

Description: A two-part exploration of meditation and inner and outer sustainability: First, a one-week, (mostly) silent meditation retreat in the Insight Meditation tradition (12-20 March), followed by an optional ten-day service retreat providing opportunities to put meditation into action through work on earthen building, organic gardening, and permaculture landscaping, while also continuing formal meditation practice in the mornings and evenings (21-31 March). Led by Zohar Lavie and Nathan Glyde of SanghaSeva, with Dharmalaya’s faculty and artisans facilitating the service work.

Volunteer Work Period (15 Jan - 10 Feb 2018)

 What: Volunteer & service-learning programme

Activities: Earthen building, organic gardening, and natural landscaping

When: 15 January through 10 February 2018 (volunteers must arrive on a Monday morning and stay at least two weeks).

Languages: English & Hindi

Facilitators: No formal facilitation or training, but as-needed guidance from Dharmalaya staff and artisans

Description: During this Volunteer Work Period, the focus is on doing physical work to support the construction of earthen buildings on the Dharmalaya Institute’s campus, as well as work in the organic gardens. There is no formal educational or training programme as such, but you will have opportunities to learn through service while working alongside our local team. Depending on weather and the needs of the day, work might include earthen building (adobe, stone, bamboo, etc.), organic gardening, natural landscaping and possibly some tree planting.

This holistic programme will combine elements of a meditation retreat with workshop-style activities related to sustainable and compassionate living, with hands-on work undertaken as karma yoga (mindful service to others as a path to personal and community development). There will be group meditation sessions in the mornings and evenings, plus daily explorations of traditional Himalayan wisdom for developing ourselves as compassionate global citizens and being the change we wish to see in the world.

Description: Volunteer service-learning opportunity at the Dharmalaya Institute, open to both residential and non-residential participants (though, during the rainy season, we strongly recommend staying on the Dharmalaya campus). During this period, volunteers have the opportunity to offer service for a great cause while learning the arts and methods of sustainable living in the Himalayas by doing physical work related to earthen building, organic gardening, and more.
