Volunteer Work Period (4-13 Dec 2017)

 What: Volunteer & service-learning opportunity

Activities: Earthen building, organic gardening, and natural landscaping

When: 4-13 December 2017 (volunteers must attend from the beginning and stay until the end).

Languages: English & Hindi

Facilitators: No formal facilitation or training, but as-needed guidance from Dharmalaya staff and artisans

Description: Volunteer opportunities at the Dharmalaya Institute open to both residential and non-residential participants. During this period, the focus is on doing physical work to support the construction of earthen buildings on the Dharmalaya Institute’s campus, and possibly work in the organic gardens. Tre is no formal educational or training programme as such, but plenty of hands-on work will be done — including earthen building (adobe, stone, bamboo, etc.), organic gardening, natural landscaping and possibly some tree planting.

Sustainable Living Workshop (21 Nov - 2 Dec 2017)

What: Intensive workshop-retreat (residential)

Topic: Sustainable living, including natural building, organic gardening, healthy cooking, meditation, and more

When: 21 November - 2 December 2017 (must attend from the start and remain for the duration)

Description: Twelve-day residential service-learning workshop on the whats, hows, and whys of a sustainable life. This holistic programme will combine hands-on training in earthen building and organic gardening with explorations of traditional Himalayan wisdom and modern solutions. Learn to build eco-friendly structures in the neo-traditional Kangra style of esteemed eco-architect Didi Contractor. Learn to grow, cook and eat tasty and nourishing, plant-based (vegan) meals. Contemplate our relationship with nature and the values of sustainable and compassionate living. Start your day off right with meditation/yoga sessions each morning.

Topic: Holistic exploration of compassionate living and the path of service, incorporating Himalayan culture and philosophy, meditation and conscious movement, the organic gardening, healthy cooking, natural building, personal development, and more

Description: Residential programme in a hybrid retreat-workshop format, exploring both the inner and outer aspects of a compassionate and sustainable life oriented toward the service of others and playing our humble parts in the creation of a better world. This holistic programme will combine elements of a meditation retreat with workshop-style activities related to sustainable and compassionate living, with hands-on work undertaken as karma yoga (mindful service to others as a path to personal and community development). There will be group meditation sessions in the mornings and evenings, plus daily explorations of traditional Himalayan wisdom for developing ourselves as compassionate global citizens and being the change we wish to see in the world.

Activities: Earthen building (primarily interior work), organic gardening, and natural landscaping

When: 3rd-29th July 2017 — You may apply to volunteer arriving on a Monday (3, 10, or 17 July), with a minimum commitment of two weeks. See below for details.

Facilitators: No formal facilitation, but as-needed guidance from Dharmalaya Institute staff, artisans, and interns.

Description: Volunteer service-learning opportunity at the Dharmalaya Institute, open to both residential and non-residential participants (though, during the rainy season, we strongly recommend staying on the Dharmalaya campus). During this period, volunteers have the opportunity to offer service for a great cause while learning the arts and methods of sustainable living in the Himalayas by doing physical work related to earthen building, organic gardening, and more.

During this period, there is no structured educational or training programme as such, but there is plenty of hands-on work to do — including earthen building (adobe, stone, bamboo, etc.), organic gardening, natural landscaping and possibly some tree planting — and Dharmalaya is a beautiful place to get your hands dirty and learn about green living and Himalayan culture in the process.
