Description: Residential service-learning programme at the Dharmalaya Institute exploring both outer and inner sustainability, combining hands-on training in earthen building and organic gardening with a daily meditation programme. Learn to build eco-friendly structures in the neo-traditional Kangra style of esteemed eco-architect Didi Contractor, while contemplating our relationship with nature and the values of sustainable and compassionate living.

Description: A two-part exploration of inner and outer sustainability: First, a one-week, (mostly) silent meditation retreat in the Insight Meditation tradition (17-24 March 2016), followed by an optional ten-day service retreat providing opportunities to put meditation into action through work on earthen building, organic gardening, and permaculture landscaping, while also continuing formal meditation practice in the mornings and evenings (25 March - 5 April). Led by Zohar Lavie and Nathan Glyde of SanghaSeva, with the Dharmalaya faculty facilitating the service work.

Earthen Building Workshop (7-13 March 2016)

What: Intensive service-learning workshop

Topic: Earthen building methods & techniques

Where: Dharmalaya Institute in Bir, HP, India

When: 7-13 March 2016 (must attend from the beginning)

Language: English (with Hindi translation if needed)

Facilitators: Mark Moore et al.

Description: Six-day, residential service-learning programme at the Dharmalaya Institute providing hands-on training in traditional, eco-friendly earthen building techniques of the Himalayas. Learn by doing, in the real-world context of helping to build a few new structures on the Dharmalaya campus. Activities will depend on the needs on site (and the weather), but are likely to include adobe masonry, earthen renders (mud plasters), stonework, and possibly other methods and techniques of earthen building.

Volunteer Work Period (7 Dec 2015 - 5 Mar 2016)

Activities: Earthen building, organic gardening, and natural landscaping

When: 7 December 2015 through 5 March 2016 (Volunteers may arrive and depart anytime during this period, with a one-week minimum stay)

Languages: English & Hindi

Facilitators: No formal facilitation or training, but as-needed guidance from Dharmalaya staff and artisans

Description: Volunteer opportunities at the Dharmalaya Institute open to both residential and non-residential participants. During this period, there is no structured educational or training programme as such, but there is plenty of hands-on work to do — including earthen building (adobe, stone, bamboo, etc.), organic gardening, natural landscaping and possibly some tree planting — and Dharmalaya is a beautiful place to get your hands dirty and learn about green living and Himalayan culture in the process.

We will practice meditation not only sitting on the cushion but also in action, performing mindful service work doing organic gardening, eco-friendly earthen construction, and natural landscaping around the beautiful Dharmalaya campus.

Nada Brahma: Music & Meditation Retreat (1-7 Nov 2015)

When: 1-7 November 2015, with an optional extension from 8-14 November (must attend from the start and stay through at least 7 November)

Description: An exploration of creativity as expressed through music, and of the nature of reality as expressed through the vibrations of sound. The retreat will include workshops in individual and collaborative songwriting as well as instruction in sound meditation with daily practice. This retreat is open to everyone, whether or not you are an experienced musician/singer/composer/songwriter.
