What is Contemplative Geometry?

Contemplative Geometry is the holistic study of the relationships between shapes and forms as they occur in nature, and as expressed in art, in design, and in architecture. The word ‘contemplative’ highlights that we are taking a reflective, investigative and philosophical approach to this exploration of shape and form, including our own place in the world of shape and form — how we are affected by the geometry of patterns, and how we can bring that awareness into our designs.

Contemplative Geometry is also the foundation of contemplative/sacred architecture, and as such it is the starting point for explorations of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional design in harmony with nature’s patterns and proportions.

Essential ingredients:

  • a drawing compass

  • a 30cm ruler

  • blank paper (A3 size preferable, otherwise A4 or US Legal/Letter)

  • pencils

  • eraser

  • water colours / crayons / colour pencils

This course is recommended if:

Conditions of participation:

  • You are interested in a contemplative (meditative or sacred) approach to design

  • You are deeply interested in the patterns of nature

  • You are a designer or architect interested in contemplative/sacred traditions

  • You are interested in the possibility of enroling in Dharmalaya’s upcoming longer online course in Contemplative Geometry, and/or its planned residential course in Sacred Architecture

  • To get the best of this course and support real transformation, you will need to participate fully in both of the sessions, as the programme is cumulative.

  • Since the course is interactive, you will get the best results by joining the calls and participating live.

  • There will be homework assignments between the first and second call, which all participants are expected to do before the 9th August call in order to keep up with the group experience.

 Dates & times

The course will unfold in two sessions (of approximately two hours each) on 29th and 30th July 2020, for approximately four hours in total.

Timing for the group calls would be such that people in different time zones would be able to participate, tentatively scheduled for 6:00pm to 8:00pm IST (India Standard Time), which would be morning in the Americas, midday in Europe, and late evening in East/SE Asia and Australia/NZ.

There might be a follow-up course offered after this one, to be announced at a later date.
